The
Kung Fu Hustle I saw is not the film I saw promoted in it's
trailers. This is a hard core, Hong Kong action pic which brings
it's funny side above the surface. The trailer simple promote the
slapstick aspects of the film. This is not Airplane. This
is not Caddy Shack. This is closer to Jackie Chan, John Woo, Chow
Yon-Fat. I enjoyed it, but then again I liked Airplane and Caddy
Shack too.

I was once told that studios hire multiple companies to produce different trailers to highlight different aspects of their film, ie romance, love story, action, etc. Is this still true? I wonder what the implications are for cinematographers in the production of trailers and other publicity materials?

I think the main issue here is that you have to take trailers with a large quantity of salt. You have to read reviews to decide what a movie's about. It's remarkable how different a movie can be from its promotion. I found this out on the Five Heartbeats.

I guess my question is, are trailers and other publicity materials another site with the cinematographer's work can be manipulated by others? I can imagine a trailer editor sitting at his avid and deciding that a particular shot is too dark or could benefit from "strobe" like flashes or might look cooler with an image filter, etc.
